There are two kinds of Halloween evening. One involves creaking floorboards, looming shadows and somebody leaping out of a cupboard. The other involves a little orange light in the window, an extremely important black cat, a bowl of sweets and somewhere lovely to spend the evening.
We're firmly in the second camp. October is too beautiful to spend the whole month being chased by things. There should be room for warm witchy corners, pumpkin carving without the mess, storybook ghosts and cosy Halloween games online that make you smile rather than reach for the light switch.
Here are eleven Halloween websites and browser games without jump scares, from Google's best-loved magical cat to little potion puzzles and a pumpkin-lit Calphii room. Most are here whenever the season finds you, not just on October 31.

01 / 11 · A tiny black cat with a very important spellbook
Magic Cat Academy (2016)

If Halloween were always this charming, nobody would need to hide behind the sofa. Momo is a little black cat at a school of magic, and a band of ghosts has arrived to cause trouble. You cast spells by drawing the shapes floating above their heads. It's colourful, funny and just hectic enough to make you lean closer to the screen.
The fun is in that lovely combination of a good little character and a simple idea. The school gets busier as you progress, but this is cartoon spellcasting rather than a haunted-house fright fest.
02 / 11 · The same brave cat, now among the stars
Magic Cat Academy: Space Edition (2024)

Momo returned in 2024 with a broomstick and a wonderfully ridiculous assignment: chase ghosts right up through the atmosphere. The familiar drawing spells are back, but the scenery leaves the school behind for moonlit skies and outer space.
It's a particularly good choice if you like Halloween to be bright, silly and a little adventurous. You might arrive for five minutes and stay until Momo's latest cosmic predicament is settled.
03 / 11 · Carve a jack-o'-lantern without a kitchen full of seeds
Pumpkin Studio
Pumpkin carving is excellent Halloween entertainment right up until you remember the slippery insides, the wobbly knife and the kitchen table that needs wiping down afterward. Pumpkin Studio lets you sketch and carve a digital pumpkin on a screen instead.
Make a huge grin, a lopsided ghost or a little face that looks deeply surprised to be a vegetable. You can save and share the finished pumpkin. It's the rare Halloween activity where cleaning up means closing a browser tab.
04 / 11 · A whole autumn night, just how you like it
A cosy Halloween room in Calphii

Calphii has a real Pumpkin Halloween scene in its background collection, along with more playful spooky possibilities. It's a lovely alternative to a dedicated Halloween game: a digital room you can decorate with the mood, music and widgets you actually want to keep around.
Choose the pumpkin scene, layer a little ambience, put on something gentle and settle in with a book or an unfinished project. If you have a Pixel Pet wandering about, it adds just the right amount of company. The best Halloween evening might be the one where absolutely nothing jumps out at you.
05 / 11 · A glowing pumpkin with plenty of second chances
ZumaTools Pumpkin Carving
If you want something a little closer to actually designing the face, this browser tool lets you try different pumpkin styles, stamp eyes and mouths, and use a virtual carving tool. Then switch off the lights and let the candle effect do its thing.
The best part is the freedom to undo every slightly questionable artistic decision. You can create a happy pumpkin, a black-cat design or an enormous toothy grin and save the result as an image, animated GIF or printable stencil.
06 / 11 · A two-minute puzzle over a bubbling cauldron
Cauldron Drop
Cauldron Drop gives you a little witchy puzzle rather than a scare. You drop ingredients into a cauldron, merge matching pieces and see what increasingly peculiar things your brew becomes. There's something pleasing about going from dew and sparks to mushrooms, moons and stars.
It's quick enough to fit between chapters of a book or while waiting for the kettle. The Halloween feeling comes from bubbling magic and ingredients, not from anything lurking in a dark corridor.
07 / 11 · Colourful potions in a candlelit little laboratory
Potion Sort
Some Halloween games want you to run. Potion Sort would rather you think. Coloured liquids sit in small flasks on a candlelit shelf, and your job is to pour until each bottle holds just one colour.
It's the kind of puzzle that makes five minutes mysteriously turn into twenty. There's no creature chasing you, only the slow satisfaction of seeing the little bottles settle into their proper order.
08 / 11 · A procession of little ghosts on a night out
Ghost Parade
Imagine Halloween as a friendly town celebration, with costumed ghosts making their way along lantern-lit streets. Ghost Parade is a routing game from CozyWorld: the pleasure is helping the little procession find its way rather than surviving an attack.
It has the playful October feeling that often gets lost when Halloween recommendations lean too heavily into horror. If you're in the mood for friendly spirits and a small problem to solve, this is a charming place to begin.
09 / 11 · An autumn logic puzzle with glowing lanterns
Haunted Lanterns
Haunted Lanterns keeps its ghosts friendly and gives you a little logic problem instead. It's part of CozyWorld's collection of browser Halloween games, designed to keep the pumpkins and lantern glow without handing you a nightmare.
Choose this one if your favourite bit of a cosy game is that thoughtful pause before everything clicks into place. It belongs to the slower, gentler side of the season.
10 / 11 · Witches, broomsticks and an outrageous amount of candy
Global Candy Cup (2015)
Google's older Halloween Candy Cup has a particularly lovely premise: witches flying for sweets. Four colourful teams compete in a candy-collecting challenge, with the sort of cheerful character designs that make the whole thing feel like a storybook competition.
This is the Halloween you remember from childhood: bright costumes, ridiculous amounts of sugar and a little spirited rivalry. An excellent choice when you want seasonal fun without any darkness at all.
11 / 11 · A tiny alchemist's workshop full of possibilities
Elixir Lab

If you enjoy making things more than reacting to them, Elixir Lab is a gentle browser alchemy game. Combine the familiar elements of water, fire, earth and air and see how many strange inventions you can discover. The little laboratory belongs perfectly to a night of candles and pumpkin spice.
The pleasure is experimentation, not speed. Try a combination because it sounds silly, then try another because now you're curious. Magic should leave room for curiosity, after all.
Make an entire Halloween evening out of it
Start with something you can play together: a pumpkin-carving contest is much funnier when everyone's idea of a friendly face looks faintly alarming. Then try one of the little witchy puzzles or help Momo chase away a few cartoon ghosts. No horror marathon required.
When you've finished playing, choose an autumnal scene, put on some gentle music and settle in. Calphii's Pumpkin Halloween background and Witches Corner scene make the season feel like something you can live in for a little while, not just something that appears as a decoration in a game menu.
And if Halloween isn't your thing, the wider world of beautiful little internet discoveries is waiting with oceans, old radio stations and secret windows.
Keep the pumpkins. Leave the nightmares.
There is no prize for having the scariest October. A pumpkin-lit room, a little mystery and an absurdly brave cartoon cat can be more than enough. Put the kettle on, find something sweet and let the evening get wonderfully autumnal.
